CHPTR: storytelling through sound
CHPTR is a new series of long-form DJ mixes and live events by Simon Shackleton. Each mix unfolds like a narrative - a carefully crafted sonic journey that transcends genre and tempo, blending rich textures and emotional arcs to take listeners somewhere deeper.
In an era dominated by instant gratification and short attention spans, CHPTR reclaims the lost art of storytelling through music. Drawing on more than 30 years behind the decks and in the studio, Simon uses his vast knowledge and musicality to build immersive, evolving sets designed to shift perception over time.
With CHPTR, the destination is not the dancefloor alone - it's the inner landscape of emotion, memory, and connection. Each mix is a standalone story: unpredictable, cinematic, and full of surprises.
CHPTR MIXES
The story begins with CHPTR 001, a 4½-hour odyssey that opens with ambient soundscapes and slo-mo grooves before gradually building into breakbeats, electro, deep techno, and sunrise melodies. It's a psychedelic electronic journey, not in the hippy sense, but in how it gently alters perception over time. The mix is rich with texture, color, and emotional depth—a showcase of Simon’s signature ability to create emotional connection through sound.
The journey continues with CHPTR 002, a four-hour mix first shared during an exclusive feature with Decoded Magazine. Broadcast live from Simon’s Colorado home on a sun-drenched summer’s day, it began with righteous funk, slo-mo house, and chugging grooves, before unfolding through nu disco, breaks, electro, tech house, and deeper shades of techno. Rich in texture, movement, and groove, the set captured a euphoric shared sunset moment with friends and neighbours. Drawing on artists like Black Sabbath, Greg Wilson, Moodena, Groove Armada, Yuksek, Da Lukas, Superlover, Framewerk, and exclusive Reconstructions from Simon himself, CHPTR 002 is one of his funkiest and most summer-friendly throwdowns to date—a seamless narrative of sound, energy, and emotion.
