THE SPACE IN-BETWEEN

Oplot’ (released on Friday April 29th) is part of a series of works exploring the transitional period between sleeping and waking, where the vivid lucidity of dreams quickly evaporates into the cold reality of day. This space in-between – where the Alpha and Beta brainwaves exist on a simple spectrum of frequencies – fascinates me.

I’m intrigued by how they interact; how they sometimes work to sabotage one another, yet somehow co-exist seamlessly. There’s something indescribable, yet universally relatable about the intangibility of the ‘dreamstate’, much in the same way that emotion expressed through music is both highly subjective and individual, yet universally ‘understood’.

For many years music has been my own language of emotion. It’s been the primary vehicle to express feelings of anger, beauty, frustration, overwhelm, resentment, longing, optimism, love, but it’s often been subjugated to function.

In the past, I’ve often imposed limitations and constraints on myself as an artist in order to meet the more functional demands of DJs and the dancefloor, but in recent years I’ve developed an understanding of how important music is as a language of shared emotion. The output you’ll be hearing from me this year reflects a newfound commitment to a sound that I’m calling emotive electronica.

Out Friday 29th April, ‘Oplot’ is dedicated to the courage, determination, bravery and fortitude of the Ukrainian people.
